1. Find the Right Mentor

Ready to take your photography skills to the next level? It's all about finding the right mentor! This is someone who gets you, who pushes your creativity, and encourages you to be uniquely you. They're not just sharing their knowledge, they're inspiring you to see the world through your own lens.

Keep in mind- your mentor doesn't have to be a world-famous photographer! Maybe it's a local photographer who's work has been inspiring you for years. They most likely have got a bagful of insights that can really help you out.

So you've spotted a potential mentor? Go on, ask them for a coffee or a fun photo walk. It's not just about learning, it's about building a real connection. Sure, get their thoughts on your work, but also tell them about your dreams and ideas. This gives your mentorship a solid base to grow from.

And hey, if you ever find yourself in the breathtaking beauty of Utah, give me a shout! I've been mentoring aspiring photographers for the past 6 years. Doesn't matter if you're a complete newbie or already have some experience under your belt, I've coached all sorts of folks on the path to mastering photography. 2. Master Your Camera Settings

Understanding your camera's basic functions and settings is the ultimate foundation to your photography growth. Take some time to read through the manual (for reals, do this), and experiment with different settings before heading out for a shoot. Familiarizing yourself with shutter speed, aperture, and ISO will significantly impact your ability to capture a scene as you envision it. Please, don't shy away from the technical aspects; embrace them as tools that lend power to your creative expression!

And remember, practice makes perfect! Set up a date with your camera – be it during the golden hour or under the harsh midday sun. Each time, the light will throw a new challenge at you, and you'll learn to tweak your settings just right to nail that shot!

Check out online tutorials or local workshops, maybe even a class or two. It's a chance to learn from the pros and connect with other like creatives. Who knows, you might pick up a trick or two that could change your photography game forever!

3. Understand Compositional Techniques

Once you've got a handle on your camera settings, turning your attention to composition is a natural (and fun) next step. Good composition is what transforms an average photo into a captivating image. Familiarize yourself with the rule of thirds, leading lines, framing, and symmetry. Each technique is like a sprinkle of magic that can completely change how your photo feels!

For example, using the rule of thirds can help distribute visual weight more evenly across your image, leading the viewer's eye where you want it to go. Similarly, leading lines can draw attention to your subject, adding depth to your shots. Experiment with these techniques in varying contexts, like landscapes, portraits, or street photography, to see how they alter the overall feel of your images.

Lastly, don’t forget to break the rules now and then. Progress often arises from creative experimentation. While techniques are important, they should serve your vision rather than constrain it. Allow your unique artistic flair to shine through your compositions, allowing your visual storytelling to unfold.

4. Experiment With Different Styles

In the world of photography, it's like being a kid in a candy store- so many styles to try! Starting out, you might gravitate towards a particular niche, like portrait or lifestyle photography. That's great, but don't box yourself in too soon. By experimenting with different styles, you can gain a deeper understanding of the art and craft of photography. It's like adding more tools to your toolbox, and who knows, you might discover a style you absolutely love!

Why not shake things up with some street photography on your next city stroll? Or get up close and personal with nature through macro photography? Each experience helps you hone your skills, making you a more versatile photographer. Plus, dipping your toes into various styles can help you carve out your unique signature, a blend of elements from different genres that speaks to your individual aesthetic. So, go ahead, explore, and most importantly, have fun with it!

My photography journey began at a local studio specializing in portrait photography. I had the opportunity to capture a wide range of sessions, including family portraits, newborn shoots, weddings, and more. This diverse experience enabled me to identify the photography styles that resonated with me. Working in a studio environment, I utilized a combination of artificial lighting and a posed approach, while also experimenting with lifestyle photography. This exploration of various styles ultimately shaped my passion for lifestyle photography!

Your photography is a journey of discovery, and each step, each experiment, helps you find your signature style.

5. Build A Portfolio

Your portfolio is like your own personal art gallery! It's where you display the photos you're most proud of, the shots that really show off your individual style and talent as a photographer. So, where do you start? Grab your best photos, and don't be afraid to mix things up! Show your flair for different styles, it's all about showcasing what you can do!

If you don’t have a large portfolio or any portfolio, then make sure to get started ASAP! Offer discounted or free photo sessions to friends or family members to build up your experience and showcase your talent. Volunteering your services for local events or charities can also provide valuable opportunities to practice and gain exposure. Remember, every photo you take is a step toward refining your skills and building a compelling portfolio.

Arrange your photos in a way that tells a story, because who doesn't love a good story? It'll make your portfolio even more captivating! If you don’t have a website or social media, get one set up asap! Having your own website or social media page isn't just a great way to show off your photos, it's also a fantastic way to connect with other photographers and get your name out there!

Remember, your portfolio isn't set in stone, it's a living, breathing representation of you and your journey as a photographer. So keep updating it, keep refining it, and make sure it always shows off the best of what you can do right now!

6. Networking, Networking, and Networking!

Networking is an essential skill that can greatly enhance your photography journey. Attend local workshops, join photography clubs, or participate in online forums to meet fellow photographers. Engaging with others not only fosters camaraderie but introduces you to different perspectives and experiences.

One of my favorite Instagram accounts for networking with other photographers is @Unscriptedposingapp. They regularly feature super talented photographers and have resources for education and inspiration!

A lot of newer photographers feel intimidated by the idea of networking and I promise you are not alone. The thought of putting yourself out there and connecting with others in the industry can be daunting, but it's an essential part of growing as a professional. Remember, everyone starts somewhere, and most experienced photographers understand the challenges you're facing.

7. Don’t Forget About Editing!

Editing is your secret sauce to turn those good photos into 'wow' ones! Ever heard of Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop? Well, it's about time you did! These phenomenal editing tools can transform your photos in ways you've only dreamed of. And they are pretty affordable!

Starting with the basics, like cropping, exposure, and color balance, can make a world of difference. See how these small tweaks can dramatically amp up the wow factor in your shots! And if you don’t want to stop there, dive into the deep end with filters, retouching, and layering! Push the limits of your creativity and watch your photos come alive!

But don’t forget, editing isn't about making your photos look like someone else's. It's about enhancing your own unique vision, right? Aim to strike that perfect balance between artistic flair and authentic representation. It's your work, after all – make it shine!

Remember – practice makes perfect. So, roll up your sleeves, let your creativity run wild, and get ready to take your photography to the next level. Ready, set, edit!

8. Invest In Your Education

Now, you may be asking yourself where can I find a mentor or learn all of the knowledge and skills needed to be a photographer? Luckily, the internet is an absolute wealth of knowledge when it comes to learning a new skill. There are hundreds, if not thousands of platforms, creators, and tools available to you at the touch of a finger!

The only downside; it can be quite overwhelming to decide which resource to trust or where to even begin. But don’t worry, I have some important recommendations to help make this process a little less of a headache.

When searching for a reputable educational source, there are 3 questions that you should ask yourself:

  1. What is the credibility of the instructor or platform? Look for reviews, testimonials, and the instructor's portfolio. A reputable source will often have a strong track record and positive feedback from students.

  2. Does the course content align with your goals? Ensure that the curriculum covers the specific areas you want to improve in, whether it’s mastering technical skills, understanding composition, or learning industry editing techniques.

  3. Is there an opportunity for practical application and feedback? A good course will offer projects, assignments, or interactive elements that allow you to practice what you’ve learned and receive constructive feedback.

Luckily for you, I have created an online photography course that hits all three of these!
